Fishing
From Helbreath Portal
Fishing is one of the five item creation skills, which cannot be increased in the Helbreath USA cash shop. This skill is the only means of obtaining most fishes, which are comestible; several other items can also be caught. As the fishing skill increases, the chance of catching anything increases and waiting the time to catch special fishes and other items decreases. Although anything can be caught at any skill %, players who wish to catch special fishes and other items should train the skill to a high %.
Fishing is currently possible only on the Bleeding Island.

Using Fishing
To learn the fishing skill a player must use a Fishing Manual, found for sale at the Shop. Learning the manual sets the player's fishing skill to 20%. A Fishing Rod, purchasable and repairable at the Shop, is required for fishing. The player can get to the Bleeding Island by using a Bleeding Island Ticket, sold at the Blacksmith. The player must then go to the shores of the island or to the river on the east side. To fish, the player's hands must be free (although a staff or wand can be held). The Fishing Rod must be double-clicked and then cast by left-clicking on a spot covered with water. After a few seconds, the attempt either succeeds or fails. If it succeeds, the caught fish or item drops under the player; a bit of Exp is also awarded. If there are already 12 items at that spot, the lowest one disappears. The fishing attempt is canceled if the player turns around, moves or gets hit.
All fishing attempts decrease the endurance of the Fishing Rod by 1; its maximum endurance is 200.
Types of Fishes
There are three classes of fishes:
- A normal Fish can be caught by casting the fishing rod at a square covered with water but without any visible fish or bubbles.
- One of the special fishes can be caught by casting the fishing rod at or near a visible fish in the water (fishes also make bubbles). If the fishing attempt is successful, a dialog box appears; the name of the fish is indicated along with the % chance of catching it, which changes over time. Up to 29 players can attempt to catch the special fish at the same time. Left-clicking the "Try Now!" button tries to catch the fish, which would then drop under the player. Since the area where the fishing rod can be cast to catch a special fish is 5 by 5 squares, and special fishes are often found close together, the area of one fish often overlaps that of others. In these cases, the fishing rod can be cast further to the side rather than directly at the fish.
- One of several items can be caught by casting the fishing rod at or near bubbles (but without visible fish) in the water. This works in the same way as special fishes, although items are much less common to find in the water.
All the special fishes and items that can be caught are shown in the tables below. Chance, difficulty and average difficulty are explained later. For special fishes, the delayed health increase is added to the player's next health regeneration after the fish is eaten.

Appearance and Disappearance of Fishes
Up to 50 special fishes (including items) can be found on the Bleeding Island at any time. When there are less than 50, new fishes or items can appear at an average rate of 1 every 18 seconds. The location is chosen randomly as well as the difficulty (explained later) and the type; the chance of each fish or item of being selected is found here. All the possible special fish or item locations on the Bleeding Island are indicated as red dots on the map below. Although fish can also be found in other maps, fishing is currently impossible there.
Every fish or item stays in the water for either 10, 20 or 30 minutes - randomly chosen. After that time, it disappears, even if a player is trying to catch it.

Success Rate
A successful fishing attempt results in a normal Fish that drops under the player, or in a dialog box that appears, in the case of special fishes and items. The success chance depends on the skill %:
success chance (%) = (skill % - 1) / 105
For example, 20% fishing skill provides a success chance of 18% while 100% fishing skill provides a success chance of 94%.
In the case of special fishes and items, once the dialog box appears, there is a second attempt to actually catch the special fish or item, which occurs when clicking the "Try Now!" button. The success chance on that attempt changes as the player waits. It is initially 1% (although incorrectly displayed as 0%); every 4 seconds, it can stay the same, increase or decrease, while always remaining between 1% and 99%. The way it changes depends on the skill % and on the fish difficulty which is found here. Every 4 seconds:
- The maximum number by which the success chance % can change is (skill % - difficulty) / 10 (rounded down, minimum of 1).
- The actual number by which the success chance % changes is randomly selected between 1 and the maximum number.
- Whether this change is an increase or a decrease depends on the skill % and fish difficulty:
- Chance of increase (%) = skill - difficulty - 1 (minimum of 0)
- Chance of decrease (%) = 100 - skill + difficulty (maximum of 99)
- Chance of not changing = 1%
Thus, although it is possible to catch anything even at 20% skill, in order to reliably catch special fishes and items, the player should have a high skill %. For example, the easiest special fish requires 52% skill for the success chance to increase more often than decrease. At 100% skill, most special fishes and items will on average reach 99% success chance if the player waits long enough, but some will not. The following reference table lists the average waiting time to increase the success chance from 1% to 99%, in minutes. In the cases when that time exceeds one hour, or if the success chance decreases more than it increases, on average, no value is indicated.

Training Fishing
A player's Dex must be above 10 to allow the fishing skill to progress. The maximum attainable % is the double of the Dex score, up to 100% (50 Dex). The number of successful attempts to reach the next skill % follows the skill raising formula found here. Catching a normal Fish counts as a successful attempt, as well as making the dialog box for a special fish or item appear. In addition, catching a special fish or item counts as multiple successful attempts, the number being the difficulty of that specific fish or item.
